IntelliRail Hot Box Detector

Hot boxes and hot wheels pose serious threats to railway operations, including derailment and fire on the rolling stock. To safeguard against such risks, IntelliRail’s Hot Box Detector (IntelliHBD) uses high-speed IR Sensors to monitor the temperature of the axle boxes and wheels of the rolling stock and generate reports for each train.

IntelliHBD is an unmanned wayside system, installed between the sleepers as a set of 2 to 4 scanners with each scanner measuring up to 8 points on the axle box, wheel or brake disc. Apart from identifying hot boxes and hot wheels, IntelliRail’s Hot Axle and Hot Wheel Detector (HAHW) can automatically recognize the type of rolling stock using a set of 2 to 3 wheel-detection sensors.

The Hot Box Detector is a reliable and efficient way to ensure the safety and performance of railway operations. IntelliRail’s Hot Box Detector (IntelliHBD) is a state-of-the-art system that:

  • Uses multiple scanners to detect and monitor the condition of the axle boxes and the braking system of the trains.
  • Is installed on a hollow sleeper on ballasted tracks and in a grommet bolted design for ballastless track systems that allows the scanners to cover the entire bearing area, including the inboard seal, inboard raceway, spacer ring and outboard raceway.
  • Can handle trains with different types of engines, coaches, and wagons.
  • Can record the axle box data even for trains running at 250kmph.
  • Can record trains with up to 150 coaches or 600 axles.
  • The IR sensors included in the scanners have a very fast response time which in some configurations goes sub millisecond and in some of the low-cost versions is in ranges below 2 milliseconds.

IntelliHBD also provides real-time maintenance information and critical alarms through SMS and audio-visual notifications. The system can identify the exact location of the defective axle or wheel and keeps track of the defective coaches based on integrated Photo Vehicle Identification Systems and/or RFID Readers. It publishes reports on IntelliCloud which can be used by customer staff at operating centres can review for easy analysis and decision making. An alarm log functionality included also helps the end users log the data based on the physical examination if one was conducted.

IntelliHBD has an internal auto-calibration feature that improves data accuracy and reliability.
